The Northern Regional Committee of the Poll Hereford Society had its' inception around 1974 as a natural progression from The Northern Hereford & Poll Hereford group.

The inaugural group Chairman was Barry Tonkin while Lyn Drew was the first Secretary.  Jack Gunning, Bill Dangar, Grant Nivison, Graham Carlon, Rob Tomlinson, Stuart McCreadie, David Gullivar and David Leake made up the membership of the Poll Hereford Societies first regional group.

The aim of the group was to promote Poll Hereford cattle in the Northern region.  This was done by Regional get-togethers in the form of a Dinner to coincide with the group AGM's that was held at the Annual Glen Innes Bull Sale in August and again in December for a Christmas function which often included a guest speaker.

Regional field days were also a highlight and occasional breed feature shows helped to increase the breed profile as did the groups presence at Ag-Quip from the mid 70's.  The group has always been quick to support and take on new initiatives that included the forming of a Junior Group and the beginning of the Junior Heifer Shows, the first of which was held at Armidale Showground in January 1985.  The Hunter Valley and Coastal Region Sub-Branch was formed in February 1984.  The North Rivers Sub-Branch had been formed earlier.

1990 was a watershed for the group, in that Kathy Keys was elected Chairman, the first female to achieve this position and having some up through the ranks of the Junior movement, this highlighted the success of the initiative of the Junior movement.  Allan Croker put in a lot of hard yards to secure support from The Australian Poll Hereford Society to support the group towards the purchase of our present Ag-Quip site and erection of our shed.  This annual event has provided a great opportunity for promotion.  This initiative was also supported by the Western and Hunter Regional groups who have helped to man the stand over the years.

The group has always funded it's own activities with the aim still to promote the attributes of Poll Hereford cattle.  The first regional directory of breeders was published in 1977 and the Northern Group also creates the Poll Hereford Wall Planner as a group promotional tool for all members' activities nationally.
